Trinité sur Mer, 2 April 2010
Today the racing started with a lot of wind. After some showers the Farr 30 fleet left the harbor of La Trinite sur Mer. The start of the first race ended up with a general recall and the second start was filmed by a helicopter. Our start wasn’t too good as we did not accelerate enough. We finished in the head of the fleet with an 8th place.
In the second race we started in the middle of the fleet but were second at the first downwind mark. Unfortunately we decided to go fishing and dropped our spinnaker in the water. After Bouwe was satisfied with the catch we towed in the submerged spinnaker and proceeded with the race at the back of the fleet. In the second downwind leg our boat handling stayed rusty as our drop went bad again. Finally we finished in 16th place.
The start of the third race was slow; we tacked right away and chose the right hand side. It proved to be a good choice and we were in the head of the fleet at the first mark. In the downwind leg we were rather slow and we finished in 10th place.
The fourth and last race was the best race for us. We had a very fast start and again chose the right hand side. At the upwind mark we were in a third position but dropped to six in the downwind leg. We tried hard to keep up with the pace but rounded the last downwind mark in 7th position. After a jib reach to the finish we fought for our 7th place with Ile de France and were able to finish just ahead of them.
After day 1 we’re in 9th place overall out of 22 teams. We’re quite satisfied with our results for the first race, but we hope to smoothen the boat handling some more and get the boat speed in to high gear. Stay tuned!
