Training with the Dutch teams

Scheveningen, 16 May 2010

During the "Hemelvaart" weekend the Mumma Duck was out on the North Sea at Scheveningen for training. Together with the other two Dutch Farr 30s, Brunel and DelftChallenge, the team made a big jump in boat handling and speed.

The conditions during the four days where perfect; varying from extremely light winds to a steady fifteen knot breeze. In general the boats trained in two ways, close racing on a very short track with a lot of current making the starts and lay lines a tough nut to crack, and long speed runs where the three boats lined up close to experiment with mast and sail trim.

In the short track training we pushed hard to find the limits during spinnaker drops and boat to boat situations at the buoy rounding. The overall communication about trim, weight distribution and handling was improved as well. During the long speed tests we did hundreds of tacks and gibes and tried various rig settings. At the end of the days the results were analyzed with video footage and some outside help. We consider the opportunity to train so efficiently with DelftChallenge and Brunel as unique and extremely valuable. Thanks to both teams for the four fantastic days!

Next weekend the Mumma Duck Team will compete against the other two boats again during the North Sea Regatta. The weather looks promising and we're looking forward to the event!
