North Sea Regatta: Overall Farr30 winner!

Scheveningen, 24 May 2010

On Monday Team Mumma Duck sailed the last two races at the Delta Lloyd North Sea Regatta, with lots of sun and a steady breeze. The IRC 2 and ORC 2-5 were sailing a 40 nm coastal race, so today we raced in the middle of the X-35 and First 31.7 fleets.

Our first start wasn't very impressive. We went to the right straight away which turned out to be a good call. At the top mark Brunel was right on our tail, but we pushed hard in the downwind and did not give away any distance. The second upwind leg was difficult as the current increased; in the light air the lay lines where tricky to figure out! During the downwind and third upwind leg Brunel gained a little as they found better breeze. At the last top mark we were only a few boat length in de lead when we chose the ,left hand side and Brunel went for the middle. The middle turned out to be favorable and at the finish we won with only a few meters!

Our second start was better and again we chose the right hand side. This time we had a solid lead at the top mark and worked hard to keep it that way. Although we had one bad and one terrible spinnaker drop we still maintained a comfortable lead: another 1st place!

All the hard work in France and during training weekends has paid off during the North Sea Regatta; we've won in our class! Hopefully we can sail as consistently in the French Farr 30 event of Normandy Sailing Week two weeks from now. Next weekend the team will do some training to prepare for the racing in Le Havre.

Stay tuned!
