Normandy Sailing Week - Race day 1

Le Havre, 3 June 2010

I will draw you the situation first: There are 17 teams in the Farr 30 class. All, but one, are competitors during the Tour de France 2010. Almost all professional teams are here: Oman Sail, Groovedecci, TPM, Dunkerque, Nouvelle Caledonie, the top amateur teams and the top student teams (bravo Delft Challenge!), Safran. This means one thing: When you make a small mistake, you lose 3 places: When you make a major fuck-up, you will lose 5 places.

This is the situation we are sailing in: And we love it!

The first two starts we went for the right side of the starting line, still a bit careful: both times we were of the line in the 2nd line. The first race should not be mentioned any more, this was a FUBAR (Fucked Up Beyond All Recognition). We made three majors: mostly related to communication errors. These were included in the second race. We banked hard right again and we handled ourselves within the middle of the group: We went over the finish line in a group of minimum 5 boats; only barely catching one…

The last race was pretty good, the wind became a little more fluky in direction. Wind speed was still up between 15-17 knots. We started on the first line more to the pin-end and went into overdrive. We came up in the top few boats (although there is very little top-group, there is more one, single group). We improved especially in consistency in boat speed (both upwind and downwind). We eventually went over the line in a "small" group of 7 boats: this time as third, just behind Ile the France and Delft.

Tomorrow will be another inshore race day. We hope to increase our consistency and get more and more to the top places…

Some photos from La Havre will follow soon!

Stay tuned,
