With the arrival of spring in Holland the life of a sailor is getting nice again? Although it wasn’t too bad during winter either…. At Friday Anton and Pieter prepared and craned the Mummaduck for a nice weekend of training at Stellendam.
Crew for Saturday consisted Thijs (helm), Ralph (main), Pieter (camera), Anton (jib), Ties (spi), David (pit) and Remko on the bow. The whole day we were going to train on peels; jib peels during reaches and spinnaker peels. Due to miscommunication we forgot the spinnakers so first part of the day only jib peels were practiced while Pieter raced to Delft and back to get the spinnakers. In the afternoon we completed the training with some spinnaker peels and we were able to get some nice footage which is very useful to analyze these maneuvers and get us better and faster!
Sunday was a different story. Ties stayed home and got some time to work on his thesis, in stead of Ties we took Daniel Whitehead with us. A potential new crewmember who got the chance to show us his skills. We had a long day on the water with beautiful weather and a nice 12 knot breeze. Daniel got to see all the trim positions on board. He needed some time to get familiar with the Farr30, the boathandling and trim, but he picked it up very quickly.
We did some nice runs with lots of tacking and gibing and some longer beats to work on our boatspeed. All in all it was a very nice weekend and everybody seems to get in a flow that we need in this phase of the campaign.
Next weekend will be the last training before we go to Trinite sur Mer for Spi Ouest 2010. 20 Farr30 are registered until now so that will be 4 very exciting days of racing!
Signing off,
Pieter
